How It All Started...

Christ is the Answer Chapel was located at 1430 Morse Street NE when Pastor Alfred A. Owens Jr. decided under the anointing and the leadership of the Lord to make it his first church, in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington District of Columbia.

The church opened in May 1966 with eight members:  Sandy Meekins Brice, Gladys Chisely, Carol Owens Ford, Leona McCree, Leamond Meekins, Odessa Meekins, Katie Williams, and Shirley Williams.  It was a small building, but Pastor Owens and the founding members had church as if the building was packed.  It did not take long before a pulpit was built, an organ was purchased, and a communion table graced the front of the pulpit.  The church began a radio program in Washington, D.C., which brought souls and filled the metal seats as Pastor Owens preached the Word.

Expanding The Vision...

Six years later, on Easter Sunday, April 11, 1971, the church moved to 5333 16th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.  It was a house church where Pastor Owens and approximately 100 members had more room to worship.  Additionally, he and two members made the rooms above the church their home.  The building was equipped with a kitchen, living and dining areas.  God did wonders and miracles on 16th Street as the Holy Spirit was in control.  It was while at this location that Pastor Owens met and married Evangelist Susie Carol Thomas in 1972.  The unification of her ministry with his became a blessing, touching hundreds and continuously propelling the growth of God's plan for their lives.

Where We Are Headed...

As the 16th Street location grew, more chairs had to be added down the aisle because people could not get inside on Sunday mornings or during revivals and nightly services.  Christ Is The Answer Chapel moved to 732 Webster Street NW in 1976, where Bishop Harold Ivory Williams who served as Presiding Prelate at the time and Elder Mable B. Lewis were the pastors.  It was at this location in 1977 that the church was renamed Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church of America under the auspices of Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Inc. Location after location brought the church to new heights with the leadership of the pastors who had a heart for people, respect and integrity throughout the body of Christ and the nation.  Many auxiliaries were formed including choirs and a rapidly growing youth ministry.

And We Grew Again...

In 1982, Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church moved to 625 Park Road NW.  Park Road grew to leaps and bounds. In 1984 CATAADA (Calvary’s Alternative to Alcohol and Drug Abuse) was launched at 650 Park Road NW.  Men and women, young and old, came for deliverance, prayer and classes that soon became a community service for so many in need.  It was during this time that Calvary’s Food Bank and Clothing Boutique were started, along with the HIV/AIDS ministry.  The outreach ministries and the Tract and Field Ministry canvased the neighborhood and surrounding areas from the Park Road location causing the church to continue to grow.  The Prison Ministry visited facilities as witnesses in helping prisoners find their purpose in life.  During this time, Pastor Owens founded Calvary Christian Academy which served the church and community for nearly 40 years. Evangelist Susie C. Owens served as the first director.  In 1985, Calvary Bible Institute opened.  The on-going work of the ministry never failed to spread joy and salvation through word and deed as it continued to grow.

And Then We Grew AGAIN...

However, the Park Road location began to be packed to capacity from the main floor to the balcony, and even the lobby.  There was no more room to even place a chair.  In 1988, the church began a second Sunday Morning service at Cardozo High School at 13th and Clifton Street NW. This service took place after the early morning service at Park Road location. In the same year, Pastor Owens was elevated to the consecrated office of Bishop in the Mt. Calvary Holy Church of America, Inc. and Evangelist Susie C. Owens was ordained Co-Pastor of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church.  After three years of continual church growth, Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church moved to 610 Rhode Island Avenue, NE in 1991 with a “Celebration March” that started on Georgia Avenue and attracted everyone in site with more than 500 members on foot, holding banners in cars and a beautiful, decorated motorcade.

Since that time, God has richly added to the ministry, now a flock of thousands who have been touched, changed and delivered.  God has blessed Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church to not only impact the lives of its members but the community through many initiatives and projects including our state of the art Family Life Center, Project Feed 5000, The Lunch Box Program, Calvary Health Care, The S.O.N.S. Ministry, a dynamic Youth & Young Adult Ministry, Camp Nation, an Annual Community Fair, Back to School programs, scholarships, and over 20 outreach ministries and programs.

On Friday May 5, 2023, Bishop Owens announced his transition to Founder Pastor and Overseer of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church along with Dr. Susie C. Owens. With much prayer and after seeking the Lord, Bishop Owens selected Pastor Rodney L. Carter, Jr. as Lead Pastor Designate to continue the vision and mission of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church.

The church is blessed as God continues to endeavor to continue to reach souls and impact the lives of all generations through Exalting Christ, Equipping the Believer, and Embracing the Community as we build our new campus to better reach and impact the world.
